Are there any certification programs similar to Vibration for electric motor testing?

There is presently an effort by ISO TC108 SC5 under Working Group 10 to produce the certification program. It is still a few years off.

The Institute of Electrical Motor Diagnostics (IEMD) is leading the way with an international membership in taking part in this effort. This month IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine has featured IEMD and its efforts. I will post the article in tonight or tomorrow.

Actually, I do have a few questions for the board on this topic:

Why would a certification program in electrical motor diagnostics be important to the technician or company? Does the employer really consider such a certification? And, does it have an impact on your compensation?

Hi MotorDoc,

In my organization, it is important that we are certified in the job nature that we are currently doing. This is because it reflects our competency in that area.

In the same note,I have two questions.

Where can I go for level 1 certification in EMD?. Does the courses offered by the equipment companies lead to such certification?

Howard,

Yes to certification. We have many electricians who were trained to use the pdma gear and ran it for years in each of their respective shops. It was amazing how much data was collected and no reports were ever issued, failures occurred. Of course since nothing was ever reported on due to the MCE testing, no one in management ever championed it or wanted anything to do with it.

Then we built a core team, took the MCE away from everyone except those that were targeted for the team. These were the few that cared and embraced the technology.

Each of us has a training plan that includes certification in one or more technologies. So we do require it and it is reflected in the performance review.
