Hallo all,

can someone advice me how to use spare rotating equipement (say pumps) in the oil refining industry/environment? Should one switch to the main one as soon as it is repaired, or not? Is there any specific logic behind it? Any opinions, publications, presentations etc could prove helpful.

Thanks,

alexandros

Aside from all the opinions you will get on this subject, I would suggest you run the pump immediately following corrective maintenance to verify it is a viable back up should you need it.

If you use the search function (under the find tab) you will find many posts on this subject. It looks like it searches whatever level of the forum you are currently in so go to the highest level in the forum and enter keyword rotating pumps or any variation you like.

Dear Alex
If you are not running your spare equipment, make some schedule for Manual rotation to avoid one point loading in BRG. It will be monthly twice..The main logic will be to avoid cake formation of grease and Loading of BRG.

Gurusamy, did you really turn the shaft twice monthly? Is it easy to rotate the shaft especailly for big pumps or motors? Do you practice duty/standby or frequent switching? If duty/standby, how have you practiced this? Any marked decrease in pump or motor failure?
