How do you apply ISO14224 in SAP PM?

In which fields in SAP PM do you use the failure modes, maintainable items, failure descriptors, failure causes, maintenance activity, detection methods of ISO14224?

Depending on your "build" of SAP PM, you should have a tab called Items on the Notification.

On the items tab you can get to codes for method of detection, actions taken (maint activity), again, depending on how your "build" of SAP was set up.

In fact, you can fill in your Symptom (Problem) codes, maintainable items (object part codes), and cause codes from this tab as well, as the Items codes. In our build, we have several groupings to select from, including things like Method of Detection (how did we find out we had a problem); Predictability (was it predictable and was it predicted, and did it cause losses); Root Cause codes (a huge list of root causes); and Activity codes (what did we do to correct the problem).

Take a look at all the tabs on your notifications and see what all is there. It's probably available, but the code lists may need to be worked, or they may need to be "turned on".

I don't seeing those fields for detection. Is it the PMActtype field? Activity code yes.

Anybody has used the failure descriptors to codify entries into notification or order decriptions instead of free text entries?

You need to ensure you are looking at notifications and not orders. Codes are only available in notifications and are not available in orders.

Recommend you look at the SAP notification list editing transaction selection screen (transaction IW28 or IW29) to see what fields are available. Press F1 to display SAP help documents on fields of interest. Similarly you may wish to look at Notification Item list editing (IW68 or IW69) to see what is available there.

Where do you indicate total or partial functional loss? In the Effect field of the notification.

We use the notification item codes only for identifying object part, damage and failure cause. However, I have seen examples of others who use the codes more extensively and then automatically determine follow up tasks based on codes entered.

Our code maintain as following in SAP (Notification screen)

1. Damage Code
2. Cause Code
3. Activity Code

and each information you can enter as long text

We also use those 3 but there are more values in the ISO14224 as I mentioned above. What I can gather from the above responses are mapped between ISO14224 values with SAP PM fields as follows:

Method of detection - in which field?
Predictability - which field?
Actions taken - PMActtype code field in WO
Activity codes - Activity code field in notif
Maintainable items - Object part field
Failure modes (Is it same as Symptom/Problem codes?) - Damage code field
Failure causes - Cause code field
Total/Partial functional loss - Effect field in notif
Failure descriptors - notif description if the field is codified

Yes, I agree that the ISO142224 needs to be added on especially for downstream oil & gas equipment such as reformers, boilers, reactors, columns, tanks, steam turbines, seawater intake equipment, ect which are not specifically contained in ISO14224 because it's meant for upstream oil & gas industry from which it originates.

Hi Josh,

Firstly you have linked to the forum a copyrighted document (ISO14224) (c) which most people here may like to have a copy of but is quite illegal to do so.

All the object, damage and cause codes are part of the configuration through transaction SPRO where catalogs can be created. In your situation you have switched on under Notifications content>>Maintain catalogs:

B: Object part
C: Overview of Damage
5: Causes

There are many more that can be switched on here to meet your requirements for ISO14224 reporting.

An alternate method is to store the logic of your decision making in a relaibility package and link the outputs (maintenance strategy) to SAP. The benefit of this is that it provides clear links to your strategy decision and does not create a reporting nightmare in SAP for the tradespeople.

The linked ISO14224 standard is not only copyrighted it is also out of date. ISO issued a new version of this standard in 2006.
