I am interested in finding out how users have configured the SAP Plant Maintenance Order Maintenance Activity Type field.
What MATs are used? |
PMActtype(MAT) depends on order/notif types eg as follows:
BM- Run to failure, Unplanned shutdown CM-Repair, permanent or temporary PM-Minor prev maint, Major prev maint NC-Non-core activies IN-Non-instrusive inspection, Instrusive inspection etc. TQ |
Two other methods that I have seen:
Commercial: Warranty, Insurence, Rework, Routine, Statutory Activity: Cleaning, Repair, Lubrication, Testing, etc. I agree that the design of your MATs is heavily impactedd by your Order Types and also by the way your Work Centres are structured. |
The maintenance activity type description is customer specific but remember the planned costs are maintained by a link between the activity type and cost center. Where the cost center used in the work center has a price per hr for each activity type
How many unit prices and activity types do you have? We have used only 1 flat rate initially 1 $ and then average hourly rate.
I have worked on projects where there were dozens of activity types. You can have different activity types for different order types

Don't confuse the Maintenance Activity Type (MAT) field with the Activity type field. They are not the same.
The MAT is an order header field whilst the Activity Type is an operation field. Costs assigned to the Activity Type which are posted on a $/unit rate when confirmations are entered. |

The differentiation is good David. I thought they are supposed to be the same thing becasue we have "repair" in MAT and Activity type in KP26.
What are common activity types used? How do you guys set the unit rate? |
Josh,
Sorry about the delay in replying, I have been enjoying the beaches on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. The following activity types are defined in our system ADMIN *Administration ENG Engineering MOD Modification PLAN Planning PM *Preventative Maint. PREP Preparation PS *Process Support REP *Repair SBY Stand-By TA Turnaround Activity WAIT Waiting However in practice only those marked with a * are actively used. To determine the rate we divide the annual salary of the work centre by the number of hours we estimate they will confirm during the year (Total paid hours for year less annual leave, long service leave, sick days etc). We provide standing orders for the confirmation of time spent at training and meetings. Have never been able to get it very accurate as there are too many variables most of all inconsistency from work force in confirming hours. Some third party contractors are also confirmed with the hourly rate being based on a historical average. |
Do you maintain all these activity types using KP26 with the same average unit rate? What is the advantage of doing so? Because we only maintain internal activity for inhouse or external for contractors.
Btw, have you got your MATs? |
For a particular cost centre each of the activity types has the same rate. However, this rate is calculated separately for each cost centre, taking into account all work centres to which it is assigned, as per the calculation detailed in my previous posting.
See attachment for details of our MATs. This message has been edited. Last edited by: David - Australia, MAINTENANCE_ACTIVITY_TYPES.doc (22 Kb, 52 downloads) MATs |

That looks advanced but what is your purpose to set it up like that?

Josh,
I assume you are referring to the MATs. By categorising our work orders using the MATs it assists us in focusing our attention on the more important tasks such as safety critical instrument checks. For example, the MAT code PIC has been set in the maintenance item for all our safety critical instrument checks. The work order when called will have this MAT and then is the flag to Planners, Cordinators and Managers that this job is more important to the business than the myriad of other priority 3 orders (Priority 3 for us means needs to be completed by a due date). Ok, I see you couple the MATs to the job priority. Didn't realize it before even though I see the need to subprioritize jobs within the same priority eg 3 which would be the bulk of it. Anyway, is this the real purpose of having this MAT field?
