Would others be interested in an Ultrasonics/Acoustics posting board. One exists for each of vibration, oil, thermography and motor monitoring. I think it is time for Ultrasonics to be heard (pun intended).

Terry:
Could existing discussions on ultrasonic be reclassified to a new board if created?

Thanks Terry, with the reclassification of the discussion it is easier to study a topic and avoid to post a discussion that maybe already posted elsewhere.

Wow, I like this... Bring it on attitude. For 12 years I sold ultrasound. Millions of dollars of ultrasound equipment. I used to think, "when will the market be saturated with this technology?".
In the past couple of years it seems that airborne ultrasound has taken a back seat to other pdm technologies. It is a fact still that many still think of this instrument as "only a leak detector".
Think about Integration.....Integrate this technology with your current pdm program and watch for results. Open forums about IR almost always has a word or two about using ultrasound to hear corona or arcing when scanning switchgear. But, these same forums fail to pass on what I think is the number 1 reason to use airborne ultrasound with IR, and that is SAFETY. Remember "SAFETY FIRST"? To hear corona, tracking or arcing before opening a cabinet, a door or entering an electrical vault may save someone from injury or death.
Vibration analysis as well, may mention ultrasound but ususally it is a negative connotation. Today the manufacturers of airborne ultrasound coming out with wave form anlaysis software to help the techs with diagnosing problems such as gear box damagae, outer race problems and lubrication.
So, whether it is IR or Vibration, Airborne Ultrasound is meant to compliment not override or to be used in place of. I think this sometimes gets lost at conferences were vendors are trying to sell what they have.
So here we go, it is up to you the technicians, engineers and maintenance managers to seek the truth about this technology and what the future holds for this technology.
Don't let this "old hound dog" of technology sit in a corner any longer for an occassional hiss of an air leak or chatter from a steam trap. Ask those questions, update your current equipment, accessorize it baby! These instruments are still the most "Return-on-Investment" you can buy.
Have you got airborne ultrasound? Would you believe that just about everyone of you out there does? You just don't know who has it, what corner or closet it is shoved into. Many of you may be surprised to find out that you have more than one instrument, make and/or model.
There is help out there for you to learn how to use your equipment and to learn the negatives and positives about your equipment.
Ask yourself...
Will the equipment I have support my applications?
What are my applications?
Is my equipment applicable for todays predictive maintenance technologies?
Are my technicians familiar with this technology?

Its like a new day, almost euphoria! Maybe not euphoria, but it is great to see that someone is still interested in knowing about this technology through discussions.
I look forward to seeing your questions and answers regarding this technology.
Jim H.

We haven't used ultrasound for the offshore oil & gas platforms. Any good suggestions? is ultrasound being used in the GUlf Of Mexico?

Thanks again Terry for setting this new board up.
I am a firm believer in the power of ultrasound and there are occasions where a problem is more easily identifiable with ultrasound than with vibration.
I hope that I will be able to make regular contributions to this board in the years to come.

Josh:
Yes, Ultrasound is being used on platforms. I spent a day & night on the AUGER Platform training Shell technicians how to use airborne ultrasound for pdm maintenance and leak detection.
