My boss just bought us an SDT 170M+ complete with a variety of sensors, headphones etc. I have been doing vibration analysis (spectral and waveform) for the last 12 years. Ultrasonics are to enhance the current program. I can see a few areas where it would be very beneficial and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'm sure I'll be bending your ears for next few months.

Ron,
The best way to get acquainted, especially for bearings, is to spend at least a half day or preferably a whole day, to make a lot of measurements and observations. Contact Measurement Points: Bearing Housing Seal Housing Gearbox Housing Pump Housing (Cavitation) Airborne Measurments (fixed position or scan): Shaft Coupling (very useful) Belt Drive (very useful) Chain Drive Motor Case Compressor Case (air leaks, valves, etc.) Motor Control Panel (MCC for electrical faults) Make a log of this info: Machine ID Component (motor, fan , pump, etc.) Speed (rpm) Point ID dB Value Level Variation (steady, spikes, etc.) Sound in Headphone (characteristics, sounds-like?) Observations (what you see, hear, etc.) This should get you started on a serious evaluation. Walt |

Hi Walt,
Also being new to the ultrasound world, I was wondering what/how are you are doing with the airborne on the couplings and belt drives? |
