I would ask you about some method to detect lack of tightness in pipes with ultrasound technology. Which other problems you could detect in pipes as possible cracks or internal failures? Some impurities in pipe materials, ..?
I know that the method would consist in using US Transmitter method and I know it depends on severity of tightness failure, ..... I am asking about your own experiences. Regards Allen |

I know ultrasound can detect leaks but to detect cracks or internal failures, do you mean to use UT to do like to detect crackings or laminations in boiler plates during manufacturing?

No, I am referring to the case that similar tests that Eddy current does in pipes for example or similar? For example, if I put some UT transmitter inside a pipe, which things could you detect from outside with some detection probe? Only leaks or perhaps some internal defect or some lack of thickness for example?

Ultrasound is also part of NDT (Non Destructive Testing), together with X-Ray, eddie current etc.., but that is a very specialized subject. On NDT sites you will find more info on this.
The ultrasound in this forum (somebody correct me if I am wrong) is "limited" to the listening of ultrasound noice that is generated by working equipment or leaks that causes turbulence. Inspecting an air header with an ultrasound gun, will tell you if it is leaking at screwed joints (just put some more teflon and tighten better), or in the case of a crack or hole, it will only tell you: "air is coming out here" If there is an internal crack, but there is no leak (yet), the gun will not detect it. Thanks Steven,
I suppose it but more quiet and more sure with your confirmation. Regards, Allen |

Allen,
Ultrasonic analysis can detect internal flaws and lack of thickness problems. We are using GE Panametrics EPOCH PLUS for thickness measurements and flaw detection. It is a good technique, especially for pipes, for finding internal cracks, corrosion, blocking of debris inside the pipes and all.. Guys, Is this forum only for "Listening of Ultrasound" or "Ultrasonic Testing" in general? Have a nice day!! |

Your right Jenish, ultrasound is also used for cleaning of obstructed pipes.
I erroneously "assumed" that we were talking about "airborne" and structureborne ultrasound, which in most cases is the type of equipment PdM people use, together with VA, infrared and other techniques to test equipment without interfering in its operation. Tickness tests can be considered PdM, but it has strong ties wit NDT (Non destructive Testing) and we (maintenance people) consider it "static" Steven van Els, CMRP |
