We are working on some community upgrades and invite your comments on what features or abililities you wish this community had.

Any idea is welcome - regardless of probability.

Would appreciate any all suggestions.

Forum internal message capability for members would be nice.

Thanks Wally. This is one of the features driving our upgrade projects. We want to get out of the way and let members do more without our intervention.

You will be happy to know that we have that on the wish list - with the member having full control of the privacy settings - so he/she can choose if they want contact or not. The possibilities look good.

Thanks again - will take as many other suggestions as you have in addition.

What would you think about a Knowledge Base forum for those special informative threads?

What would you think about a similar threads link at the bottom of the thread that the user is viewing?

I was blocked from uploading a 350k attachment today - says the limit is 300k.

In the past I have uploaded bigger (not sure if this is a new restriction). At any rate, attachments are a great tool to share info, and allowing more attachments is better imo.

We can attach only 1 document per post. How about more if there is no storage limit?

Too much personal emails between members will defeat the purpose of encouraging more participation and information sharing in the main forum. I was once asked to show the content of my personal comunication in this this forum.

In the past, I have moderated a few forum boards. What would be nice is a faq or
Knowledge Base section. Also, maybe break down each manufactures into their own sections. Example, Csi , Skf, Commtest etc. Any and all info pertaining to one to the types of equipment should be located in these sections. Also, further breaking down the sections into specific topic areas. Creating a separate sub-forum for vibration, balancing, alignment etc.

I like the idea of a FAQ.

It could be something any member can submit and it resides in a separte location (for example thermography FAQ's, Motor FAQ's, Vibration/Alignment/Balance FAQ's). If other members have comments, they can submit comments to the FAQ originator.

There is one negative aspect of FAQ's. Some forums are very strict about "read the FAQ's" before asking questions. I don't like that approach because it can stifle questions/discussion. People should be free to ask questions and responses can certainly include a link to the FAQ's if desired, with added info/comments that may be appropriate.

The FAQ section would be a great improvement and the possibility to refer to it in a discussion. Also a glossary section explaining all the acronyms we use in maintenance would be handy.

I understand what your saying about FAQ's. On one of the sites that I was on, there was a FAQ section, but it was original set that anyone could make replies to the post.
This can make a nice and neat area sloppy over time. Creating a new post in say a general area and having a link back to the specific FAQ, keeps it clean.

As far as the strict rules on reading the FAQ's, this is mainly directed toward newbies to the forum scene. After answering multiple questions over and over again, if one would have just looked through the FAQ's first, time could have been saved.

All excellent suggestions - we are taking them each to heart.

The FAQ's are tricky but we are studying best practices now.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

Terence, on www.eng-tips.com , there is an example how the FAQ's are used and a rating system which is for members only.

Private messaging is a good idea, but I would restrict it only to registered members. Imagine what happens when a "spam bot" gets hold of the mailing list Mad

Does internal messaging have a standard e-mail list? I thought it was all handled without formal e-mail addresses.

Likewise, I think it's a good idea for registered members only.

If I am following a post from the start it would be good to see the most recent reply at the start on the front page as opposed to three or four pages later. Most recent on first page descending to original post. Less clicking to see newest reply.

Setup Karma Titles?

Or delete the colum/field at the Members Directory if we are not going to use it (why wasting space in an empty field).

How about leting us put our picture up so it is in the corner of our post so you can put a face with the author. We have this option on our board IR Talk. It makes it nice to see who the person is and more personal. www.irtalk.com

I like this suggestion. We'd probably see what people's alternate personalities look like also. That could be fun.

I know this forum stays independent (non-vendor specific) and that is appreciated. But what if product vendors, for a fee to help support forum and this idea, had a place to have product demonstrations using one or any media type players? I'm not talking about an advertisement but actual demo. Something an individual could view when interested in purchasing a product.

May be far fetched but thought worth mentioning.
