Hi!
I have been working in the field of machinery maintenance for almost four years. Now I intend to get a certification in the field of maintenance and reliabiltiy. Which one should I go for? CPMM or CRMP ? Which is better? Are these certification really worth doing? Anyone can help me out here!!

CPMM stands for Certified Plant Maintenance Manager.
CMRP stands for Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional and are basically tests where you can quantify what you have learned about maintenance "after school". Formally the only pre-requisite for CMRP is to be active in the field of maintenance and reliability, but the questions can in most cases only be answered by seasoned maintenance engineers, managers, trainers, team leaders, or professionals who been in organizational maintenance roles etc..

For CPMM, the criteria are "I assume " heavier, one well known CPMM heavy weight is Terry Wireman, who does not need further introduction for any well-informed maintenance professional.

The advantages?

At least taking the exam will reveal your strengths/weakness in the different areas

To prepare for the CMRP exam, there is a huge list of recommended books, which stimulates learning, networking with other maintenance professionals, participating in discussions etc..
The CMRP certificate is not comparable to the "boot camp" style certification industry used for IT.
I would not trade my certificate for an MCSE or Micro$oft Certified Systems Exorcist

Another possibility for anybody interested in advancing their skills and knowledge is to do some formal study. "Vendor warning").

Monash University offers four programs, including the master's degree in maintenance and reliability engineering. All are taught by off-campus learning (distance education), and we have students all around the world. Hundreds have graduated over the 20 years of operation.

My intentions were actually first to get a certification and then go for a masters degree. What I understand is by getting a certification first I will expand my knowledge base which will be helpful in pursuing the Masters degree. What do you ppl suggest?
Are there any other universities beside Monash University which offer similar degrees? I have heard of University of Tennessee, University of Centeral Queensland are also offereing similar programs.

As a holder of both certifications, CMRP & CPMM, as well as a former student in the Monash program I can speak volumes for them all.

I whole heartedly agree with both Steve and Ray's comments. I feel all three offer a variation on expanding your skills.

There is some "overlap" between each although the two certifications require more "hands-on" experience. The Monash Program is as Ray says, "a more formal approach". Certainly each program will help prepare you for the other.

I would encourage you to pursue all three approaches as the maintenance world needs new blood such as yourself.

Can I got the scholarships?

I do not check the forums often enough, so a late reply! We do not have any scholarships. Students usually get reimbursed by their employer. As the studies are conducted by distance education, with no on-campus activity, costs I think are moderate. We have had a student in Thailand this year (and 15 other countries)

Are there any universities in the USA that offer a Masters in maintenance and reliability engineering? I am very interested now.

Check the University of Tennessee. They have a graduate program at the Maintenance and Reliability Center.

I will second the University of Tennessee program.
It is all online. The instructors are very knowledgeable coming from varied backgrounds. The program for a Graduate Certificate is 12 credit hours 6 are required courses in Reliability and 6 are a choice of electives.

I am completing the certificate in May. If you already have an undergraduate in engineering I would recommend going for the masters which is also offered at UT.

Here in Canada, a licensed Millwright (Industrial Maintenance Mechanic) is about the most respected overall maintenace reliablilty proffession around. I say overal, because in some aspects, we are a jack of all trades, master of none.....that is to say we have a tremendious amount of knowledge on most subjects, but dont necessarily specialize in any single one. Sometimes millwrights will specialize, but not always.

I personally obtaineds my Millwright License, and took Management courses afterwards..

In any case, it is a great, rewarding, and fulfilling profession!!

One of the best book for CMRP preparation is " Maintenance & Reliability Best Practices" by Ramesh Gulati, Industrial Press Inc.

Its worth reading.
