I recently changed jobs and was surprised to find that my new company did not have a formal shutdown planning process that included pre-shutdown milestones, KPIs for the shutdown, or post-shutdown milestones and critique. I set about building one based on processes I had used other places when I started wondering if there were best practices that I hadn't been exposed to yet.

Can anyone recommend a source for shutdown planning process best practices? Does anyone have best practices they would be willing to share with the forum?

Hullo,
There are some reference books out there, e.g.,
Turnaround, Shutdown and Outage Management: Effective Planning and Step-by-Step Execution of Planned Maintenance Operations by Tom Lenahan

Managing Maintenance Shutdowns and Outages by Joel Levitt (Hardcover - April 2, 2004)

Some practical illustrations are available in several chapters in my book "100 Years..." details in footer.

Thanks, Vee. I'm familiar with the titles on all three books. I'll check them out and see what I can add to the process I cobbled together from my own experiences.

I won't be surprised if someone got hired because you know something that others don't have.

What aspects of the shutdown planning process that you want to know more? Perhaps to start with, you can share on your shutdown KPIs.

Do you use the same CMMS for managing shutdown works and routine maintenance jobs?

Do you apply project management body of knowledge and front-end loading to your shutdown planning?

The first plant turnaround manual that I read is that of ICI UK which they call "Overhaul Manual". I'm not sure you can access it but it's quite comprehensive and a good introduction to shutdown planning.
