Please let me know if there is an instrument to measure the thermal growth.

I have used the Acculign system for this. Very simple and very accurate. Relatively inexpensive also.

Mike gave good advise. Acculign probably covers most hot alignment problems regarding machinery. It can monitor machines, base, piping, etc.. and axial position. Optics also is good for costly equipment. On small rigid machines an across the coupling method may be used; dynalign (old, used eddy current probes), laser if mounted properly, and one could evaluate his/her situation to call a shot if water stands were good enough for their specific application. Also an old method was to shut-down the machine and jump on it with indicators (but it must be done within minutes).
