The above paragraph is grossly wrong IMO. Misalignment is generally detected through vibration analysis (too many try to discredit vibration as a tool). And as it becomes worse, it is more easily detected and when misalignment is termed as "gross misalignment" you'll find it manifested into 1X as radial misalignment increases.
