Saw the post on intrinsically safe laser alignment system. I have a similar situation here also. I work in a polyethylene plant in which the main ingredient is ethylene. I was aked to get a quote for vib monitoring hardware to stud mount and cable out to a termination box, connect BNC and take vib readings. Both of these areas where the accels and t/box are, are considered Class 1 Div 1. I use a 2120 to collect data in and around these areas already which have the same classification. If I'm not mistaken, my 2120 data collector IS NOT intrinsically safe. What do others do either to change collectors or "loopholes" used to continue using the collectors in this type of area? Thanks

Don we have a procedure in place that allows us to carry a LEL meter, and use our standard Data Collector in the area, the Procedure was originally written for the I & E group to use test and calibration equipment in these areas.

That is also what we do. We take datas collection in hydrogen hazardous area with a LEL meter. Samething if I need to use a stroboscope.

You can permanently install accelerometers and IS barriers to cable out to a non-hazardous area, so that any data collector may be used. The barriers prevent any voltage that might result in a spark.

This can get very expensive and installation is complex to insure compliance with standards. I did one installation in a pump room on an oil tanker where previous pump failures had resulted in explosions and a loss of life. This is not an area where I would take any shortcuts!
