IRD had information for basic design and operation. Shows attaching the rod and sliding counter-weight in a nutshell.

Above is a link to a file that provides pretty specific information. There is one correction required. On page 7, you need to add an exponent 4 to L as shown in the powerpoint attached. (You need both the link and the attachement.....Use the attachment to correct the info from the link.) dynamicabsorber.ppt (544 Kb, 48 downloads) |

Don't forget DenHartog's book on vibration.

Den Hartog will provide a lot of good theory.
I liked the Entek pdf file better because it had good practical information that we used to successfully design an absorber. One of the important attributes would be to put a slideable mass near the end of a bar. That gives the ability to fine-tune the absorber to find the sweetspot that minimizes vibration after installation. I tried to derive the formula at the end of the Entek pdf file, but I was unsuccessful. I have no idea where they came up with that but it works. If anyone is bored with extra time on their hands, I'd be interested to see a derivation. |

Here's an excel program by Mike Ingram of RA Entek (I don't know if he still works for them or not) that will calculate the weight needed for different size and type material. It's pretty self explanatory. Especially if you've read the aforementioned pdf file.
