I'm not familiar with the Datapac circuitry, however, I suspect that the EEPROM may be one of the Dallas battery-backed parts with either an external coin cell battery or an integral battery. The ones with an integral battery have around a 10 year life but it can vary pretty widely. These are frequently used to store setup parameters and route information.

You might look for either a coin cell or a large chip from DALLAS. If you see a Dallas part, check the part number at www.maxim-ic.com to determine if it has an integral battery. If there is such a chip, replacing it MAY solve the problem....if the software reloads the missing information. If there is such a chip, it may be in a socket in which case it can be replaced with some care. If it's not socketed, it would have to be de-soldered which is not a project for someone not experienced in electronics.

Good luck!

I know nothing about circuitry or repairs, but I own stock in Maxim and think you should buy one of their chips Wink

Danny, I love MAxim parts and use a lot of them. I'd use even more if, after I've found the perfect part and started my design using it, that there wasn't an 8 week lead time if I want to buy 10,000 at a time and even longer in managable quantities. Could you talk to somebody about that? <g>

Phoo, I don't believe the clock chip is part of the problem, although they are sometimes used to provide a backup power supply for memory chips. The green item appears to be a large electrolytic capacitor. Probably not related to the problem either.

It looks like this unit uses non-volatile memory which doesn't depend on a battery to maintain memory. Without being familiar with the circuit, I can't be of much more help.

I believe there are some companies doing data collector repairs that don't require the yearly extortio...er...I mean maintenance.... fees that some manufactures charge.
