Every year we have our primary fan pump element changed out during our annual outage. The pump is a goulds 3420, runs between 320 and 380 rpm.
After start-up I took a baseline on the pump, the regular spectrum looked fine but the peakvue showed cage. It is still very hard to convince the powers to be to shut down a peice of equipment that has just been rebuilt because of a few small peaks in peak vue.
I took data again two days later when we were running again and saw little change, four days later we came to a screeching halt.
Now I have some good evidence if this shows up somewhere in the future

I have more on this pump to share from last year that I will post later.

Scott--

Thank you for the great case study! Since I incorporated PeakVue readings into my normal routes last year, I've seen this rear it's ugly head a few times also!

Question for you (and other PeakVue users) though: is it conceivably possible that cage frequency (& harmonics) in the PeakVue spectra could possibly be, in some cases, BSF instead (as the modulating frequency around the carrier) even as BPFI sometimes shows up in PeakVue just as 1X & harmonics?

I'm still pretty new in this stuff!

Thanks-- Tony

Scott,
What kind of sensor mounting did you have? What was the waveform amplitude? Cage usually shows up in PeakVue data with a lubrication problem or with a ball spin defect. With lube problems you will see cage and harmonics and with the ball spin defect you will usually have cage fundamental and harmonics and cage sidebands around ball spin harmonics (a lot of times ball spin will only be seen at 2X BSF and multiples).

Cages typically fail due to lubrication problems and if you were not using a flat magnet on a smooth, clean flat pad the lubrication fault may not have shown up. With the proper set up a lubrication problem should have high waveform peak amplitudes and if the waveform is autocorrelated it will usually have either no periodicity ar have the period of the cage frequency. I just presented a paper last week with a lot of research I have done on lubrication problem detection using PeakVue.

What was the Peak g-level in the PeakVue TWF?

If you have BSF, you generally will see cage sidebands and Cage in PeakVue spectra due to going in and out of the load zone at cage. Lubrication issues will sometimes show cage in the PV spectra (you are amplitude modulating random events). If it is true cage (periodic at cage frequency and not amplitude modulating at cage), then the Autocorrelation function will clearly show cage. Cage also shows up if there are excessive thrusting.

Dr. Robinson, Jim Crowe
I use a flat magnet on my route data and this is one of the few points in the mill that has a good clean surface to get your readings.
I am sending a copy of the TWF and correlated. Thank you for your input.

JIm Crowe,
Could you please add me to that list for your paper?

Scott Harper,
Golly, the amplitudes sure look low to me for such a catastrophic failure....good catch! Did you by chance try the 500 Hz highpass filter? Sometimes the 1,000 Hz highpass will filter out a lot of the energy.
