This is for those that work in Nuclear Plants.

Do you have a procedure or method to add balance weight(s) to equipment that is safety related?

Was helping our Nuke Plant balance a safety related room cooler fan. Vendor had used clips that fit over the fan blades. We did not have the clips so I wanted to use safety related nuts and bolt on a drilled hole in the support rings. Just wondering what others are doing.

Ron, I've not worked in a nuclear plant, but I would hesitate to recommend drilling holes in the fan you mention. However slight, that approach compromises the structural integrity of the fan wheel. A drilled hole could become a stress riser, cause a crack, induce a blade resonance, etc, etc. (See the Oooops! post)

My recommendation would be to acquire the appropriate clip-on weights; while there is always a slight chance of "slinging" a weight, if installed properly, this is highly unlikely. The source I use for clip-on and airfoil weights is CD International. If they don't have it, they can get it, and they have fast shipping.

Rusty

Wheel material? Epoxy glue may be an option. The clips if steel are generally thin and will rust, weaken and sling off. Generally if a hole/nut/bolt is used; one may consider the backing plate rather than a vane.

If these are unacceptable; you may be more specific and post photos and get a better opinion. Mine probably has room for improvement.
