We just installed a turbine air compressor with speed up to 52K RPM. I don't have experience with machines that run this fast. We use accelerometers of 100 m/g and 500 m/g. I don't think 100 m/g is suitable for this application. I would like to know which accelerometer is suitable? Also is it realistic to set Fmax to three times gearmesh frequency, should I be looking at GM in spike energy or envelope spectrum? I'm still waiting for gear numbers from vendor.
Thanks
dnk

Good luck with that!!

Make sure you do all your calculations and get what you can. Chances are you won't be able to go out that far. You will exceed the sensor and meter capabilities.

Casing readings are not the best for this type of application. When you find out the teeth and get the GMF you can fit accell. It will probably be best to use something like a 50 M/G or a 10M/G. You will also need to stud mount the accelerometer to get useful data.
IS the machine protected with prox probes?

Yes it is protected with prox probes. It's set to give alarm at 1 1/2 mil and shut down at 2 mils.
Thanks for yopur input.

The 100 mV/g accelerometers should do the job but you should check the specs and make sure if 3xGMF will be within operating frequency range.

If this is an Ingersol-Rand Centac compressor or similar, then you probably have a 2-pole motor and a bull gear of something like 384 teeth so gear mesh frequency will be well beyond the range of even stud mounted 100 mv/g accels and 3.5 times gmf will be beyond the range of most data collectors.

So, what is a turbine air compressor? It doesn't look like the air compressor that is part of a gas turbine.
