Hi guys,
We are experiencing high vibration in some of our cooling pipe systems due to water hammer!!I googled(Is it a new word? -Holding flow velocity at startup. -Locate any undersized pipes and replace it with a larger one. -Secure loose pipes to a wall with pipe clamps. -Installing air chambers. -Installing water hammer eliminator. -A slower acting globe or gate valve will prevent water hammer better than a quarter-turn ball valves. -Use a stand pipe up stream of every valve. -Add accumulator or desurger. Did anybody have success stories in solving water hammer problems by implimenting any of these sloutions? Is there any other thing i have to do to handle this problem? Have a nice day!! |

Jenish,
A long time ago I lived in a house that had bad water hammer every time you opened or closed a valve. We had well water but pretty high pressure on the system. We installed air chambers made from pieces of pipe vertically "t'd" into the lines close to all the valves. I believe they were about 12" long. This would probably relate to your "stand pipe" above. It worked very well in relation to what we started with. Dave |

It would probably help to have a brief description of the system and plant evolutions in progress at time of the water hammer.

As Pete suggested, a system lay-out and where exactly is the problem encountered and what are its results. Even a solution could be long sweeping radius pipe or pig-tails dependant upon where and what. Is it knocking out equipment or??????

Hi guys,
Sorry for the late reply!! Actually, i was not directly involved in this problem. So it took some time to get some information.. This piping system, having the problem,is in our Scale Pit, which delivers the scale pit water to the clarifier.. 2 Pumps are pumping the dirty water and the pipes connected to these pumps are vibrating during startup. This pipe is of 350mm nominal dia. Last year we had an accident on some other piping system where during the startup the vibration was very high which broke the supporting clamps and the overhead pipes fallen down..I will try to get more informations later!! Dave, Your success story give us more confident for trying the stand pipes.. Thank you!! Have a nice day!! |
