A subcontractor will be installing a machine base for low power testing of our >50 MW motor soon. I have heard rumors that they plan to level the frame with nuts under the frame, then grout it in place. I have not been able to sleep since, because I suffered through many similar installations 2 careers ago. I am preparing a gentle, even-handed statement, and would like to include some on-line references from name brand pump, fan, gearbox or other machinery describing the proper method, which is metal shims near each protected anchor bolt, left in place after grouting, and later torqued.

I found a few at places like Goulds pump, but I seem to recall some better ones.

Anybody have favorites at their finger tips?

Thanks,

Dan T

See if this site helps. Solutions

I ran into this situation some years ago. At the time it was an issue I could not change. My approach then was to agree to the nuts for leveling but shims had to be placed on either side of the studs. When grouting our base the studs were to be protected (maybe 1/2 PVC) from the grout so after grout had setup the leveling nuts were backed off and everything was torqued down. This installation has lasted more than 15 year now and vibration has not been a problem. Sometimes you can get an alternative solution that will work but may not be exactly by the book. Sometimes they will give in if you make enough calculated noise. Keep pushing!
