Performing a balancing job with CSI's Fast Bal II the following question has emerged.

Set up:
- Single plane (narrow rotor)
- Two measurement points: OBH and IBH (inboard and outboard bearings)

Question:
'When the software does its calculation for CW size/location based on reference and trial runs, which measurement point it is working off of: OBH, IBH, or both?'

It appears that the algorithm is trying to minimize combined vibration although I'm not sure about that. The manual does not say a word.

Obviosly if one does not keep an eye on other measuremnt points vibration level, vibration will be minimized at this point but the other one may increase. This may happen for instance in cases when some couple unbalance is present.

In any case, how does CSI's algorithm work?

How do other balancing softwares work in this respect?

Thanks,
Dave

I haven't checked the Fastbal II, but the first version was a least squares balance routine. The routine minimized the sum of the squares of the residual vibration at all the measurement points.

Thanks, Bill. The OEM has confirmed it. I just wonder as to why OEM did not clearly mention about the least square method in the manual?
