How severe to side bands have to be to consider them a problem? What is the indication to do something about them, is it number of them or their magnitude?

Hi Jamie,

As a problem becomes more pronounced, the sideband amplitudes increase and additional sidebands above and below the center frequency appear. The spacing between the center frequency and the sideband is important as it identifies the originating problem. In a gearbox, the sideband spacing will identify the speed of the shaft in the gearbox that has a problem. Sidebands also help to identify electrical problems in motors, and help in assessing gearbox and bearing defect severity.

Have a nice day!!
