Torsion vibration can be easily measure with cheap hardware commonly used in vibration. You may use photo tach or speed encoder signal through a FM demodulator and FFT analyser. If you are interested, just send me E-mail to mbelanger@cci-wabush.com. Best regard, Marcel |

I had a E-mail from Ben this morning and I like to share the answer with you guys since he probably got my E-mail from this post. Question: Could you please sent me the information on equipment requirements to measure torsional vibration. Thanking you in advance. Ben Opperman Alignment & Vibration Services South – Africa Answer: HI Ben, Torsion vibration is random used and serve only specific situation where advance diagnosis is needed. Torsion vibration is mostly resonant nature but may be otherwise. I had a case where pinion vibrations into a constant speed bull gear induce a speed modulation on the pinion that translates into current variation of the motor. The thing about torsion vibration is that most machine offer very little damping and produce extreme torque pulse on the drive train which may lead to premature gear failure. Since the force is pulsing or vibrating than precise speed recorder may be used rather than telemetry with strain gauges. In all the cases I have here, the torsion vibration is always a transient event so it is best seen with peak hold averaging technique. I know of tree method for speed recording. First is current FFT on a synchronous machine which vary with the lag angle of the rotor’s pole; to translate into torsion angle you need to have specifics electrical data as synchronous impedance, current excitation, current value on all tree phase and stator impedance. The signal is amplitude modulated (AM) and you may see sidebands at 60 Hz with the log scale. Second, you may use a reflective tape wrap around the shaft and marked every ± ¼ inch evenly around. The tape speed is recorded with laser tachometer and feed into an analyser through a FM demodulator as Copp-Tek. The demodulator generates a signal proportional to the frequency between each pulse. Instead of a tape I had used the signal from a contact tachometer, which is similar to the signal from the laser tachometer. The tough part as always is the interpretation of the data.
