Before the ISO18436 for vibration analysis certification, different insinuations gave (different) certifications based on different criteria and requirements.
Now after the establishment of the ISO, some institutions claim the compliance with the terms in the standard; so they should be recognized and equivalent, regardless of the institution name. TA, CSI, VI, SKF, Mobius and others are not really under any common mandatory regulatory umbrella for certification. My question is who makes sure that the certifications are audited and are constantly unbiased toward some products or ask for more/less qualifications in the test? Regards- Ali M. Al-Shurafa |

Shurafa,
The Britisch Institute of Non Destructive Testing (BINDT www.bindt.org) is a notified body which is able and has accreditated for example SKF and AV Technology to train people according to ISO18436part 2 level 1&2. They are busy with level 3!!! you can download from their site relevant information how this actually works. PCN is also involved. The exam which you need to do exists 100 questions within 3 hours: 75% must be good!! The level 2 exam i had was taken by a member of BINDT itself. update: http://www.bindt.org/Certifica...CN_Document_Download http://www.bindt.org/Certifica...oring_Documents.html This message has been edited. Shurafa,
Monitor mentioned The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing and the other is the Vibration Institute. (Not aware of others accredited by ISO) I have attended the Annual Vibration Institute Symposium for the a long time and have observed the process that the Institute has went through to become accredited to certify vibration analysts. The process to be an organization, ISO accredited, was a very lengthy process (maybe 2 to 3 years or longer in program development and meetings with ISO) and very detailed. One stipulation the ISO requires is that those that design the questions for the test, no matter the Category to be certified, cannot be an instructor that teaches the classes for Vibration Certification. The entire test and questions have to meet defined guidelines before the test can be approved by the ISO for distribution by the Institute. The Institute has a commitee for test development. They have a core group of instructors. The companies mentioned have a very deep background in the business. When I first started, I went through training from a company called IRD Mechanalysis. The training they offered was priceless and I was very glad that I received that training. I continued training through the Entek, then the Vibration Institute and that too was priceless. Each year I attend the Institutes Symposium I find that there is still allot to learn. I am thankful that I can attend and have that conduit of information available. The training provided by the SKF's, CSI's etc., are all valuable but may have not completed the things necessary to be ISO accredited. Then it depends on what importance that is to the student and the company in deciding which way to continue. Hope this helps! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Don Jones, |

Don,
FYI. We had big problems with the translations from english exam into dutch exam. this is a major problem because we (i) think english and have to translate this into dutch answers. for me it was easier to do the exam in english than in dutch, there were fundamental tranlations faults in this exam in which we gave feedback to the BINDT Comadit commitee. NVIB,
To my limited knowledge, if you want an ISO certification then you have two choices, British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing or the Vibration Institute. The others are excellent training opportunities and the certification will be from that company. For a very long time the certifications were earned through those companies but the next step, depending on your individual needs or your companies, may be the ISO Certification. In fact the training by SKF, CSI etc. will only prepare you better for the ISO test if you or your company decides to pursue the ISO Cert. But as Steve Schultheis in another thread, Certification validity, so appropriately put it, these exams are tough. You should get all the training and experience possible before taking the exam, including whatever training these ISO certification institutions provide. You want to maintain your certification after because you do not want to re-test. Hope this helps and others kick in some thoughts or correct me if I'm wrong. |

In the US the Vibration Institute is audited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

BINDT offer certification under NDT Personnel Certification (BS EN 473 and ISO 9712). To demonstrate compliance with ISO 18436 the above standards, the BINDT Scheme (called PCN) is assessed and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
Most other European countries will have similar bodies which are all part of the European Federation of NDT (EFNDT) and the International Committee for NDT (ICNDT). Vibration Institute is not accredited under ISO 18436 but they do “follow” the standard (as do many other providers) for Parts 1 and 2. Several training providers (including SKF) are licensed by BINDT to invigilate exams. The exams typically come after a training course which prepares candidates for the BINDT exam. |

This information came from the Vibration Institutes website.
This may explain the Vibration Institutes program better. Vibration Institute Certification Program Vibration Analyst Certification Program Accredited The Vibration Institute's four-category Vibration Analyst Certification Program was accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to ISO/IEC 17024 in March 2010. The Institute's accredited program follows ISO 18436 Parts 1 and 2. The accreditation by ANSI guarantees that the Institute's certification program provides fair and equal access to certification with policies and procedures that assess the qualifications of candidates on a standardized basis. The program is governed by an unbiased Certification Committee that controls the body of knowledge and examination content. |

Hi everyone,
In order to separate training from certification, and to ensure an unbiassed process, Mobius Institute has formed a separate, not-for-profit organization called Mobius Institute Board of Certification (MIBoC). MIBoC is in the process of becoming accredited in exactly the same way as the Vibration Institute and BINDT. MIBoC has to work though an organization called JAS-ANZ, which has the same status as ANSI and UKAS. We have spent a great deal of time and effort on this process over the past 18 months, and we anticipate being accredited by the end of this year, or early next year. (We also expected to be ISO 9001 certified by the end of September.) Like BINDT, we will be following ISO 18436 parts 1, 2 and 3. Following part 3 means that the MIBoC Technical Committee has to audit all material being used in training courses worldwide and the qualifications of the instructors (and much more). Jason: Great news, the sooner you guys get accredited the better. Personally I think that the Mobius I-learn Vibration training courses are technically the best on the market!
