Many of our Thermo Technologists are keyed in on looking for hotspots with the IR Camera. I thought I'd pass on a Cold Spot inspection use we came across.
We recently had one technologist look at our bigger HP motors that are equipped with motor heaters during a plant shutdown. He quickly identified a motor in which it's heater was not energised. The culprit was a bad relay. After the relay was repaired, the heater started working properly. We generally think of looking for hot spots on equipment while it's running. But there situations in which you should be looking at things while they are not running, and those things may not be hot spots, but cold spots. |

Great post, Don. Thanks. Cold signatures to look for also include cold fuses and overloads (may indicate single phasing motors), capacitors and cabinet heaters.
