Hi all:

Since the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, I have received a bunch of calls from various agencies, etc., asking me to send them some bridge IR imagery.

As it turns out, we have aerial IR imagery of thousands of bridges that we have collected while flying over areas looking at the ground for various clients.

We have never been hired to look at bridges, but we gathered up a few images and put up an album here...

I am this year's session chair for buildings and infrastructures at the Defense and Security Symposium's Thermosense conference and I was actually looking for some papers before this happened. I am trying to find people that have done IR work on bridges, airport runways, dams, etc., to send me an abstract for a paper on the subject.

Has anyone out there done any of this work or know where I could find someone that has? If so, please post what you find on this forum.

Thanks,

Greg S.

I posted this over at Snell, as well... but this seems like an important issue these days so I'll repost here:

ASTM D4788 lists the following references:

D. G. Manning, F. B. Holt, “Detecting Delaminations in Concrete Bridge Decks,’’ Concrete International, Nov. 1980, pp. 34.41.

D. G. Manning, F. B. Hold, “Detecting Deterioration in Asphalt Covered Bridge Decks,’’ Transportation Research Record 899, TRB, pp. 10–20.

B. W. Love, “The Detection of Delaminations in Reinforced Bridge Decks Using Infrared Thermography,’’ Indiana Department of Highways, June, 1986.

Additionally, SPIE has references listed in this area.

Marybeth Miceli published a paper a few years back on IR monitoring of composite materials bridges, but I suspect that current interest is focused on older construction techniques and materials. However, her and her colleagues' work may be applicable. Gary Weil published in Thermosense heavily in the 1980s and 1990s on combining IR and GPR (ground penetrating radar), and had been focused heavily on civil structures including bridges. His website seems to indicate that he and his company are still active in this area, and I would strongly suggest trying to contact him to participate.
