Hi all

I am fairly new to the area of thermography but i have a simple question. The company i work for is thinking of buying a Flir infraCAM, i was just wondering if anybody has started using one of these or if anyone has any comments on it. The camera will be used mainly for preventive maintenance situations and its price seems to be in the budget. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

There a many cameras in the same budget range so the most important aspect would be that the instrument be capable to perform the inspections you wish to carry out.

Shop around.

Old rule of the thumb: Get at least three quotes or options before buy one.

My company is going to buy one for secondary use in one of our remote facilities. That said, I think that the first step should be to go to IR training prior to buying any camera. An untrained thermographer is a fatality waiting to happen in my opinion.

Thanks alot everyone for the comments. The price i have been quoted by several companys is £4250, they all seem to be the same. They said this comes with a one day course with Flir, i take it this is just a day glossing over minor details of the camera and thermography in general. I understand your worrys to but would an experienced electronic technician using thermography for PM's on low voltage systems be a fatality waiting to happen?

Thanks Again

Get yourself some training first, and use the oppertunity to vealuate the camera. Contact Jon Willis at Flur UK and ask about training. Tell him what camera you are looking at and ask if one can be made available for you to use during the course. You may find this camera a little limiting for you and decide on something with a higher spec..

Tag,

I believe that we are looking at US$6750 for the Infracam. As far as low voltage, in the US that is anything under 600 volts and kills more people than medium or high voltage. Ohms Law is brutal.

Thats interesting your quote depending on the exchange rate obviously, is just a shade on the cheaper side. I have sent Jon from Flir an email and may also have a trial for a few days from an other supplier so i will have a chance to look at the camera. As for your safety concerns iam in total agreement that safety of yourself and others is paramount and thoughs not qualified whether it be low voltage (1000V and under in England) or high voltage should be not doing any kind of this work, i definitly dont for fall in the unqualified bracket though.

thanks for the comments
