I see this problem a lot especially around our 500 MCM cables feeding different sections througout the plant. However, I never give it too much thought or investigation unless the inductive heating is so high that it's causing a physical problem.

But after reading the latest article in "Reliability" magazine I am a little bit more concerned. It makes sense that if there is power being induced into a metallic object enough to heat that object up considerably, there is some amount of parasitic loss, which costs money!!

Does anybody know how to determine how much power is being lost to hysteresis? Is it possible to put a number on such a thing? I'm sure our accounting department would be happy even with an estimate of how much we lowered their power bill by fixing some of these problems.
