Hello,
Can someone please give me an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of Thermography as a PdM tool, or may please indicate me where can I find some sort of this information. I need general information not product specific? Thanks |

Hope this helps. Quick search on the web found Snell Infrared and Infraspection Institute. This link seemed to have good samples of technology in the field.

Thanks for the link. There are good examples where this technology was effectively used. However, any disadvantages?
For example to look at a switchgear is access still needs to be provided (opening of doors) or the technology has surpassed this drawback? cheers |

There are engineered windows that can be install on switch gear so the door could stay closed. Angle of view could be an issue. Placement of windows would be critical. Another technology that is available is ultrasonics. In the training courses they explain how without opening the doors (going around the edges of the door) the ultrasonic tool can hear the arching of electricity. I have used an ultrasonic tool for this purpose with success. Could be an option to use with the infrared. Most will say that having both available is worth while. One tool will not always find all things. None of the tools are inexpensive. Just depends on what you can spend.
Just my thoughts and hope this helps! |

Rennie,
What are your goals for the PM / thermal inspections? Are you looking to do them yourself? Looking for basic problems? Are you looking for detail trend collecting? What voltage level of switch gear will you need to be monitoring? |
