Shortwave is more sensitive to reflective interference from solar radiation and other high temperature sources.

Short wave is better suited to very high temperature applications.

If you don’t need high-temperature applications, you will find more features for the money (and reduced solar interference) with the long-wave cameras

Shortwave or MWIR can be used more effectively with flame filters than longwave, although there has been improvements in this area in recent years, but shortwave is still better. Also with filtering it is better suited to the Glass and plastics industries. It also works better with tracer gases, again with filtering. Another noteable factor is that emissivity errors will usually give a smaller measurement error, and as electripete says it is sensitive to solar glint, but this can be filtered out.

Bob brings up a lot of considerations related to special purpose applications. I was thinking mostly electrical and building IR where I can't see why anyone would buy a shortwave among today's offerings

Andrew - can you clarify what you're going to use the camera for.

Bob - I didn't realize that short wave was less sensitive to emissivity errors. Can you provide any more details?
