Flir Systems to Buy Extech Instruments

I wonder if this is in response to FLUKE gaining market share in Infrared cameras? Extech makes low end versions of FLUKES multi meters and they have a pretty extensive distribution network to sell IR cameras.

Anyone have insight to add?

I use the FLIR SC640 and also have a ThermaCam SD. Fluke can do what the thermacam SD can, but can't come close to my SC640 (obviously!) or other Flir cameras. I think that Fluke makes a very cheap, poor camera. I have multiple customers that have Fluke and still use me for IR inspections and call outs. I have also been told by a couple customers that they have problems with Fluke service. They make fine elecctrical test equipment, but low low end cameras. What Terrence said is correct about distribution I think. That is the only reason Fluke has that market share. If you are new to IR you will probably know fluke and have good access to it, but have little knowledge of Higher end stuff like Mikron or Flir. I think that there are alot better cameras out there for the money. On the other hand it is an easy sell for me to a customer with a Fluke, when I show them my Flir compared to their camera. I normally get their IR consulting work and they only use their fluke for very basic stuff, which is what it is good for. Cool

Flir clearly is looking to expand its distribution network as the cost of IR technology continues to get lower each year. As a long term Extech distributor, we look forward to offering the lower end of the Flir line for facilities maintenance, HVAC and home inspection, etc.
