Hello all,
We have been using the Lincoln Clear Pistol grip Grease guns and it has been a great product to avoid the mixing of grease. To take it a step further, is anyone aware of a manufacturer that on top of making clear tubes, offers different body colors? I'm thinking of something along the lines of Red for Motor grease, blue for bearings etc etc. I know that labeling and proper storage are key, but sometimes you have to take it to the nth degree of fool-proofing (or at least fool-resistance)
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

We took a different approach to avoid the mixing of incompatible greases between ball bearings in motors and other bearings. Being as the vast majority of our grease points have zert fittings, we opted to change the motor grease fittings that use a polyurea grease to the small button head style. This way, there is no mistaking which grease to use unless someone changes the fitting on the grease gun. We require our motor repair shops to install button heads on motors when they send them back from repair. It works very well with the only problem being the few motors running in the mill that we have not changed out the zert fittings. We are getting there though.

Have a good one,

Gary B

We have had similar problems with the wrong grease being used over time. Our solution was to retrain at first. This was good for some as it refreshed our goals etc. but we also needed more. As apart of our 5S approach we went to storing these guns on shadow boards, also we painted the guns the same colour as the grease and put lables on shadow boards and grease guns. It also helped that our storage area has CCTV monitoring the area, this helps as the guys almost always bring back the equipment and it is mostly clean and free of contamination.
This has been working well for about the last 6-8 months.

I'm in full agreement with Gary B's approach. Seems like many plants use the Alemite 1056 grease gun. It has two positions; a high pressure and a high volume. I had all ours put on high volume (still has 6000 psi) at 1.78 grams per stroke. Labeling grease guns is always a good idea.

I recently was in a plant that was willie nillie grab a grease gun and motors get two shots, fans and pumps get three. Their MTBF avg was ~10 months. You can see anything.

We have the clear grease tubes that fit standard guns in Red, Gold, Green, Blue, Purple, Black and Raw Anodized. You can use the clear tube to identify the grease and color code the grease guns per the application.
