Dear All,

Can any body suggest what will be bulk container material/ metallurgy for storing of lube oil. Presently I keep lube oil for centrifugal pumps in SS containers . From there our operators use the oil . What will be danger if we keep the lube oil in SS fabricated container instead of original lube oil drum?

Waiting for your valuable suggestion.

Regards,
kanti

You may want to try using plastic totes. Get ones that are a bit larger than the drums. Pump the oil from the drum, through a filter that meets your needs, then into the tote. Make sure to put a desiccant breather filter on the tote to keep water out.

Thank you Hans,

Can you please give some focus on what will happen if we store the oil in metallic container (Stainless steel or carbon steel) .
This information is for my own academic purpose.

Thanks once again

Kanti,

Please take note that clean oil is not synonymous or the same as new oil they are different, even clean oil have contaminants with them. Best practices use is try to use an offline filtration system when transfering oil into your equipment instead of transfering them directly. Use a 3 micron beta 1000 filter for your offline filtration system.

This is a portable filter with a pump use to clean the oil from contaminants, we also use them for transfering oil to systems when I was still working with the mining industry.

Hope this helps,

My Warm Regards,

Kanti,

First, were is your lube room stored, is it being expose to rain and sunlight if so, expect ingression of moisture and silicon (dust) to mixed with your oil, not to mention corrosion.

If your lube room is being kept as per world class standards with adequate and proper lighting, temperature, RH, then contaminants are kept on a minimum,

Contaminants that are present from your oil may come during the transport of your oil from the refinery to your plant.

If you are using a portable offline filtration, my advise is dont worry too much regarding the container you are using on your oil, but try to know what beta rating of filter you are using and how many microns is it ?

I am shooting with my shotgun at the dark since I currently have no idea as to where you stuck your oil and how it is being stored.

Storage and lube room is the first step in oil contamination prevention.

I think this is all I can advise you for now and I hope this helps.

My Warm Regards,

Kanti,

What is the exact type of oil (manufacturer, name of oil, part#, etc) you are using? Unless it's something really wierd, I doubt it will react with stainless steel. But to know for sure, it would be good to know the exact oil type.
