I've got two different lubricants I'm looking at for Dryer Gears at our paper mill here in Austell Ga. We're using Mystic OG-5 Outside Gear Grease right now. I'm not familar with this grease. From what I can tell on the data I have pulled on this grease it could be hard to apply with temps being 32 degrees F or lower. I am familar with Lubriplate 3000 which I have personally used at another plant with good success. The reason for looking to change is because we have had catastrophic failures at the mill in question on the fiber gears that we were running on top. We have replaced all fiber gears with metal. Sorry for the long post but very concerned about our down time and wanting to make sure we are doing the right thing! Thenks in advance for your replies.

Johnny,
What RPM do these gears turn? What is the environment...dry dusty...wet dirty? The reason I ask is I worked at a plant that had open gears too but RPM was slow and operation was not constant. Grease was not applied at all and life was 10 to 15 years. Applying grease to open gears in bad environments only makes things worse. Not familiar with fiber gears but would think that this would also apply. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Don Jones, |

The best stuff we've used is Petron. Call them at 315 427 2812

Johnny,
the right product would be a soft grease with a good content of solids such as Graphite, MoS2, etc, perhaps in Al Complex and with a high base oil viscosity, perhaps 1500 plus @ 40C. Look for a high Timken >60 and EP 4 ball test wear resistance 800Kg. THe grease should compact solids on the tooth flank allowing a long interval without relubrication. Avoid products with Asphalt as tackifier since they tend to build up on the foot of the teeth. Your local performace lubes supplier would have a grease like this. Good Luck. |
