I have noted various articles concerning greasing electric motors - Reliability News, Dr. Penrose, etc. There seems to be a conflict as to whether an eletric motor should be de-energized or running when it is greased as both situations are mentioned. What is the practice of the majority?

I think you are going to find that the practice is that a majority do it while the motor is running. The purpose behind my papers and the PdM/IMC presentations were to identify that the motor designers/manufacturers expect that the motor is de-energized for a number of technical/liability reasons.

Trust me, I get a lot of grief from the ultrasonic lubrication industry!
