Hi,
I have doubts and I would like to ask all of you...I have situation that I doubts about quality of new lubrication oil. Let say producer specify that its oil satisfy API GL5 standard or is is 10W-40. My question is: How to test new motor oil is it with in labeled quality, what are procedure, what are your suggestion? To say viscosity and test it in the lab..but what about additives etc.. Thanks |

Every new oil I ever put into place at the companies I worked, I had tested. I did the same tests (spectroscopy) as I did on used oil.
A couple of times I had x-ray flourescense ran to determine the absolute chemical makeup. Twice I have found oil with high iron content right new out of the drum. I was told it was alright one of those times because the iron "was nodular" and would not affect anything. Upon having ferrography ran on the samples, it was determined it was anything but nodular. I rejected the company, not just the oil. D |

I understand your point Dave and thanks for sharing procedure...but what if I do not have an ability to use spectroscopy...what else I need to test to be sure that oil is as declared... |

Yes there is a lot testing procedure but for start up what it would be good to test new oils...like: viscosity, density, water percentage, burning temperature, freeing temperature...?
