We are recommending oil analysis as a scheduled PM/PdM activity once a year on certain pumps and wondering when the lab gives us results saying that the oil needs to be changed out - would that be classified as corrective maintenance or preventive maintenance? I ask this because it will help us in decisions on managing our CMMS info.

Do you have an entry code for CBM or PdM in your CMMS allready set up? My vote is Condition Based Maintenance if analysis suggests replacement of lube due to lube condition. If analysis reveals high partical count of metals then planned corrective for it's replacement/repair would be the norm here.

My thoughts would be the work order to take the sample would be a preventative maintenance. Any recommendations for maintenance based on the results would then be scheduled as a corrective maintenance due to the fact that you will be correcting an abnormality. The decision is a hard one because if you correct the oil then it is my understanding that you are also preventing it from deteriorating.

So long as you capture it the same way al the time it probably shouldn't matter.

If the analyses dictates; then it's oorrective. If it's planned on specific intervals - it is a PM.
