Can anyone post the ASTM Standards (with procedure) for Lube oil analysis

There are so many of them for separate tests. For turbine oil, there is one good one. If you search internet, you will find it.

Anyway, what type of oil analysis are you interested in? Laboratory or onsite tests?

For onsite tests, don't really need standards because the toolkit has been designed to it.

I need the procedure for the following standards done in lab

ASTM d-893 - for Insolubles, pentane in Vol%
ASTM D-974 - for Acid number in mg KOH/g
ASTM D-445 - Viscosity @ 40 C in cSt
ASTM D-1533 - Water by karl Fischer in ppm
----

Actually i received the results for Lube oil sample from lab, mentioned according to ASTM Standards

But i need to know for the above tests what is the acceptable limit.

I'm not sure whether thoese standrds contain the tolerances. If yes, you have to buy them eg from www.ihserc.com. However, searching noria.com will give these ranges.

Btw, haven't you attended any oil analysis or lubrication course?

How long have you been involved in oil analysis?

If you work at an oil lab, there are a ton of ASTM standards that would be relevant for you.

If (like me) you work at a facility which has rotating equipment and sends their samples out for analysis, there is only one ASTM standard I know of that is very relevant.

ASTM D-6224 "Standard Practice for In-Service Monitoring of Lubricating Oil for Auxiliary Power Plant Equipment"

It includes a summary of the various available tests, reference to relevant standards, recommended frequencies and limits.

Am like pete. Sending samples outside and get the results. Sometimes they say ok and sometimes not ok based on ASTM standards..Thats why i asked for any limits to co-relate with the lab results.

Pete..if u dont mind can i get the standard ASTM D-6224, if u hav soft copy...

Electricpete, what is the difference of ASTM D-6224 to the following article? Do you have any article on ASTM 6224?

Auxiliary equipment covered includes gears, hydraulic systems, diesel engines, pumps, compressors, and electrohydraulic control (EHC) systems. It includes sampling and testing schedules and recommended action steps, as well as information on how oils degrade.

NOTE 1 - Other types of synthetic lubricants are sometimes used but are not addressed in this practice because they represent only a small fraction of the fluids in use. Users of these fluids should consult the manufacturer to determine recommended monitoring practices.

This practice does not cover the monitoring of lubricating oil for steam and gas turbines. Rather, it is intended to complement Practice D 4378.
