Has anyone on the forum used these pressure relief grease zerks and drain plugs. They were mentioned in an article that I read named "How to Design an Electric Motor Regreasing Program".

It was a fine article and it sounds like a good concept. I suppose you could still over pack the bearing even with a pressure relief, but it may be of some benefit. ??? I wouldn't know the appropriate pressure relief range for say, the 25-200 hp range of motors.

The motor shop I work for at times uses the relief fittings in all the motors with regreasable bearings. They use ones with a 1 to 5 lb. relief.

We have used the relief fittings on motor and pump bearings. If pump bearings have defective lip seals the grease will come out of the lip seal of the housing if it is close to full before coming out of the relief fitting.

We have used them on draw works of drilling rigs, imagine a long shaft with cathead, air clutches hoisting drums and brakes.

Overall, are they worth the change?

Do they perform as described below?

The pressure relief drain valve would eliminate the need to remove the drain plug and run the motor for 20 minutes. That's a nice labor savings if you could just start up and turn the equipment back over.

The pressure relief grease zerk would help eliminate the possibility of over-greasing the bearing, thereby reducing failures.
