Corporate has decided to require plants within Morton Salt to look at FG H1 lubricants. I am curious any feedback on usage vs. mineral/synthetics as well as any special storage requirements or policies out there in the real world. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

A company I used to work for went to food grade lubricant. They worked fine. The only differences I saw was the cost (more than regular oils, but not sure if they were more expensive than synthetics) and they also had a short storage shelf life (approx 1 year).

Talk to your oil supplier, they will give you the specifics to their line of oils.

Regards,

A good source of information is the NSF International Whitebook for a full listing of H1, USDA-authorized and NSF-registered food grade lubricants. The products listed have full approvals and should be your first consideration. The H1 lubricants can be formulated with white mineral oils, blended synthetic, and full synthetic (priced accordingly) with respective performance qualities and relative shelf life. Food grade additives such as PTFE (Teflon/DuPont) and silicone can be added to enhance lubrication characteristics. The calcium sulfonate grease formulations have particular advantages in adverse environmental conditions such as salt mining. Proper storage of food grade lubricants to maintain their H1 rating is critical. A good reference article is "Understanding Food-Grade Lubicants" by Martin Williamson, go to http://www.noria.com or http://www.machinerylubrication.com. Some of these lubricant formulations can be found at http://www.tribology.com

Our plant has been required to use H1 food grade lubricants in food grade areas since 1997. As I stated in another post, found that Mobil's Gargoyle SHC line of PAO synthetic refrigeration compressor oils actually work great in a food grade gear or centrifugal pump application. They are a little on the spendy side, but from my experience they are well worth the extra cost. We also went to a condition based oil change out program at that time, and have found that we were able to go up to 60,000 hours in certain applications. My only complaint about food grade lubes is that I have yet to find a decent H1 grease.

Dear Mark,
Halo-Guard FG is an excellent food grade grease for a variety of applications. It will meet your spec. requirements and may also cross to eliminate the need for numerous greases. Please contact Maynard Freer - 262-827-1601 for literature.

11/23/05- Lets try this again..First timer here!

Would you be interested in trying a new upgraded version of our food grade grease? What are the conditions of your plant and what are your requirements?

We have a very tacky version w/EP that will not wash out and can take the heat? It is H1...We sell it in tubes, kegs, drums and 2800lb totes!

WWW.LE-inc.com product number 4025,4025,4023

Our LGFP 2 is a clean, non-toxic grease which is based on medical white oil using an aluminum complex soap. This is formulated using only FDA tested ingredients and is authorized by the NSF for category H1 service.
