I appreciate all the help. I think we are going to end up using a mixture. We have about 500 pieces of rolling equipment that we will smart number, and shop equipment, building assets, etc will be autonumbered.

Good luck, and remember to allow plenty of room in every segment of the smart number, for growth. You could be using the same application 10 years from now in just a higher version, or perhaps even the same version.

Running two numbering systems within the same plant/system? How do you wll control that a piece of equipment is not numbered using the incorrect system?

I agree with Chris Winston about not using smart numbers for your assets. Another advantage to using the auto numbering is that you can create new tags quickly and what we do is create a tag with a new number and put in the description field new equipment. We take the tags out into the field and are able to tag the equipment take a digital photo of the name plate information and input when we get back to our offices. Using a smart numbering system might cause you to make two trips into the field. Best to you on your new endever.
