We are implementing MXES and have been going over the pro's and con's of auto numbering verses smart numbering. We have not made a decision yet and any input would be appreciated. bobm

Are you setting up a new plant? Are the equipment numbers included at your plant drawings or at other documents?

I prefer smart numbering where the equipment number or id includes some info like location, equipment type and an unique sequential code. For example:
100B0052 = Boiler number 52 located at Utilities Building 100. 051TNK0110 = Tank number 110 located at Area 51, (caution contains alien specimen) Be sure to include rules in the numbering method to avoid duplication. The complete combination of location code, equipment type, and sequence code must be unique for each equipment unit. A mechanic, just by reading the equipment number will know where to go and what to look. Versus: Equipment Number: 1002004 or Equipment Number: 1000204. (Not much descriptive, which is which?). Of course a Maintenance Order will have other information such as Building Area or room number and Equipment Description, model, serial number. This message has been edited. Not long ago, we had a long thread discussing equipment numbering. Here is the link.

Bob,
for version 6, out of the box, you have pretty much everything you need in discrete fields, and don't have much need for developing a fancy system of numbers to find things. You have locations you can set up in a hierarchy, in a facility, department, line, or building, floor, room, or another hierarchy that is reasonable for your industry, and you can associate general ledger and class/subclass/attribute coding as well. On the asset you can identify it as a rotating item, its manufacturer, vendor, classification, subclass, and attributes (model, size, type, etc.). You also have no limit on extra fields, and a 'More' search field grid when looking for your assets. You can associate domains with any extra field you add so you can standardize what your personnel enter in certain fields. More time to set up? Most likely, but it also brings the most rewards in your ability to slice and disce your data, not just on assets, but on work, purchases, transactions of all types, etc. Just an opinion, and not universally accepted at that. Best of luck. |
