Not sure if I am reading this message correctly, but in any case. MAXIMO (versions 4,5,6) have a Equipment registry and a Location hierarchy table structure. Intelligent codes are okay for Location hierarchy. However with Equipment (assets) you need to be careful. Placing P&ID in the primary key can become very cumbersome. I would put P&ID reference in a separate field for this table/record.
In some cases I've seen clients identify an asset (pkey) in a very specific manner such as describing the plant system or Location it is in. If and when you MOVE this asset to another place in the plant, then you are stuck with a primary key you cannot change. w/br john reeve synterprise solutions 423 267 5363 |

Not quite the intent of my question. We use intellegent Location hierarchy and Maximo generated equipment numbers as you suggest.
My question relates to, in the Equipment Module, you can identify a parent equipment for a piece of equipment. The manual says I can then attach spares to each and manually "roll up" child spares to the parent. I'm surprised the software doesn't do that automatically. It is a database after all. When viewing the parent equipment, the screen shows the children equipment. I have to "move to" the child equipment to see its spares (if I didn't manually attach them to the parent). My idea of usefullness in this relationship is to view the parent with its children equipment, and in the Spares tab a logical listing of spares under the parent with logical dividers listing the children spares. Correctly done with a database display the software would reflect the proper amount of parts in the field. If I add them to the parent manually to show the children parts at the parent level I duplicate field parts giving a false multiplier of the number of parts in the field. Is my thinking right? Is the software really that useless in the Equipment hierarchy module. Seems like an easy thing to do. J- I forget what I just said, I wasn't listening. JW |

I jumped threads and didn't realize it. Sorry. Still looking for an answer to my question though.

G'day Wally. no worries. There are many instances in the software product where you scratch your head and wonder why it doesn't work the way one might imagine. As a maximo consultant I go thru a progression of thoughts with any client.
1. You can contact IBM support and ask them to verify this feature 2. you can ask for an enhancement to product 3. using the power of this new technology (assuming 6x) you can alter screen design 4. or maybe the easiest solution, you can write a report which can run from that screen and show the information in the exact format you want. Depending on organization hierarchy you are in, you could be the system admininstrator or a power user or a pure end user. You may or may not have the necessary access to do these alterations. But step (4) above is straight forward. Related subjects: A. be sure you are reading YAHOO GROUPS FOR MAXIMO website (in addition to the IBM web site) B. Our company sells a SQR Integration for maximo 6X, and we sell a BIRT-on-6X integration reporting tool w/br j.r. synterprise solutions 423 267 5363 |

I understand the location hierarchy, and have used it with Maximo in every location. My suggestion of using the P&ID is as a separate field in which you could search assets by, and open work orders/requests. Then you could schedule those W/O's that are tied to the same P&ID if the entire system will be taken down.
As for equipment, I would like to think what I would find would be a parent asset, and BOM as child. I can't imagine why you would use it any other way, but I'm all ears! Lynn Bradford Consultant/Instructor ESW, Inc |
