Ted,
In that case, it makes sense to me.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the difference.

Minor point: in MAXIMO, the location hierarchy Systems concept existed in 4X (as well as 5X and 6X).

The importance of a LOCATION HIERARCHY:

Assets are placed in locations. This location could be a pump pedestal, a wall mount, a room, a corner of a room, an area, a mezanine, or a roof (and so on).
Imagine a repair work order written against this asset. The darn thing kept breaking down. Over time they discovered the vent over the top of this asset was pushing large amounts of dust particles (or whatever). The problem was not the asset specific - but the environment it was in.

Last point:
I've seen some clients operate without a Location hierarchy. And if/when they replace this asset with a different asset, they use the same asset_number on this new equipment. Obviously this is a bad thing. All of the repair history goes down the gurgler.

MAXIMO has a 'systems feature' within the location application.
I know of some utility consultants that actually design the System into the primary location hierarchy.
This is fine.
There is another approach wherein an extra field can be added to the Asset screen titled SYSTEM. And then cross this over to the WOTRACK screen to aide Operator searching. [sometimes Operators do not like the fancy drilldown feature]

What do you mean they add SYSTEMS? We have a field for process systems in 4x.

The software vendor has a feature called "systems" within the Location application of MAXIMO (beginning in 4x). This can be used - once setup - allowing a single location record to be attached to multiple systems. But this design also requires alot of Location app entries down to a certain level of detail.

I never assume however that the CMMS software vendor has all knowledge on a given topic. And there is no law that says we can't be creative -especially if the same results are achieved for less effort.

Every industry is different.
Most utility industries has plant systems.
You could simply add a field to the asset screen with a choice list that has the Plant System codes attached (in either a static or dynamic value list).
This field could crossover to the work order record and be available to the originator. They would conduct a 'system search' on this wotrack screen using this new field, and from that choose the exact asset number and loc record.

? was this the question

Do you mean a single location can be attached to multiple systems using the feature Systems?

I don't understand this, any example?
