Engaging a contractor to do your BOMS is a good jumpstart but have to monitor the quality of their prepared BOMs by QA/QC plan eg review by craftmen who are your planners now. Otherwise may end up overstocking because the contractor tries to be on the safe side.

As far as "how many" we're a small outfit. 100 employees. Planers handle 10 craftsmen; I read they should be able to do more, but we ask for a lot in the packages that go to the craftsman.
I appreciate the advice on BOM quality control. We will have the planners checking all the way. The Bom outfit usually hires some retirees from the plant they are working in, which helps. The fella leading the project was a maintenance supr and superintendant for 30 years at a plant down the road, so that outta help quality also.

How do you spread the planners' responsibilities, by discipline? In view of your higher planner to craftmen ratio (1 to 10), I think your organization is lucky because your management knows the impact of proper planning & scheduling can have on work, cost, quality, HSE, data for reliability. This is your organization strength which should be exploited by making it works and ready to make the maintenance organization centred on planning and scheduling.
