Since we're still in the stone age (ie, index cards and notebooks) we figure its time to migrate to a CMMS at our power plants in order to get a better handle on where our man-hours are going. We hope to see the fruits of the PdM program we will be concurrently implementing via the KPI's generated by the CMMS.

I've been bridled with the task of selecting the particular CMMS program to be used by our maintenance personnel. We don't have a huge budget for this, and the guys do NOT want something complicated and time consuming to use. I've gotten a couple quotes: Smart Maintenance and CWorks, also looking at Cybremetrics Faciliworks. Smart Maintenance seems like a very powerful program but is a bit more money than I'd like to spend. CWorks is very easy on the wallet (its almost shareware and sits on top of Access) and has a simple-to-use interface, but I'm worried about the functionality of the software and the professionalism of their service. Does anybody have any experience with Smart Maintenance, CWorks, or Faciliworks?

Anybody have any suggestions on other lower cost CMMS with both high functionality and intuitive interface without alot of clutter? Am I asking too much?

I just glanced at the Guru demo and while its a bit smoother interface than CWorks, but again I worry about the professionalism/reliability of a small software company (are they going to be around in five years?).

I understand your concern about using a cmms from a smaller company. It is good to point out that this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Just some feedback to assist you on your decision making process, we have used guru for quite some time now have have been very pleased with its performance and support.

Hello Sam,

be careful about the costs for a CMMS implementation.
The licence fee is the smallest part of all costs of the CMMS integration.
You will much higher costs for
- data migration and input
- definition of business processes and adaption of the CMMS
- data maintenance
- system maintenance

Before choosing a system you should know what functionality you need.
And you should ensure that you stil get support after some years for your CMMS (our customers have systems runing since 15+ years !)

ACCESS based systems look very pretty but it's better to invest in a "real" database (SQL server, ORACLE, MySQL, ...). I have seen a lot of problems in ACCESS based applications when there is a lot of data running through the system or if more than one users is using the system.
