We make mainly use of predefined lists (e.g. failure codes) which the crafts keep with them. They just type in a two-digit number (or scan it from their personal barcode book).
If these numbers never change, it is very easy to check them for correctness.
Yet we have not had the requirement of opening a new order after an inspection. But this will not be a too big issue.
Just define a new transaction which handles this. Collect the data for it and send it to the CMMS. The only "real" job is then to open a new order (in the CMMS) and fill the data.
We made a similar solution for collection of data forsuch called ad-hoc jobs. These are jobs which are not worth opening an order manually in the CMMS (these little things which take 5 minutes to go to fault location, close the door, hit the OK button and leave). As we wanted to know what time was spent on these jobs and what are the reasons of these faults we created that simple transaction on the mobile: Just scan the device/machine, type in the minutes of work (either by keyboard or scan), tell about the fault reason (one of these lists containing approx. 20 entries) and your gone.

Hello Josh,

we use hand helds from different manufactures (depending on the requirements of the customer).
Also the format factor varies due to the requirements (size of the handheld, environment, ...)

So check e.g. for symbol (www.symbol.com), opticon (www.opticon.com)

I have checked the 2 websites but couldn't figure which ones are useful. Do you mind to tell which ones do you use for maintenance work orders?

Charlie,

What CMMS are you wanting to interface with.

I represent a company that provides this type of equipment. If you like I would be happy to provide you with a list of users.

Also if you give you give me the industry you are in I can probably give you users in your industry.

Regards,
Marty
