Viru,

It would depend on what you need in the number. Do you need to be able to make some sort of determination of that the equipment or part is by the equipment number such as PMP-001 for a Pump or FLTR-001 for a filter.

If you are dealing with thousands of individually tagged items, this system does not work good. Sometimes it is better to let the system auto generate the number when dealing with larger quantities of items.

Hi Dwayne
thanks for the suggestion.
I will tell you in detail what exactly is the situation.
This company has more than million equipment and the problem is that their equipments are onboard vessel and each vessel has created its own number for the equipment so there have been cases when two equipment on two different vessel have different number.
I am looking for number system from head office perspective where the full data base is maintained and track all the equipments and consumption pattern.

Viru,

That sounds like it is going to be a fun project. Are you using a CMMS program now? Is there a character limit for the equipment ID numbers?

I had to work with a company that already had existing numbers, no where near a million. What we did was to add a series of letters before the equipment number and then kept the rest of the current equipment number.

Something like:

SHIP01-PMP-001
SHIP02-PMP-001

This way you could keep the number that is on the ship already. This could make the people that work on that ship happy and it will keep the corporate people happy.

No we are not using CMMS. it is all custom build solution. Problem with SHIP01-PMP-001 is that the equipment will be identified with Ship. I want to make it independent of ship but due to huge volume i am facing problem. They want to have some logic behind numbering. so on high level e.g.Pump ABC have same number across the whole fleet of ship so if in office they want to see how many Pump ABS is their they can check and then they also want to see how many Pump ABC is their on different ships?
You understand my problem..... it's bit confusing and this is my problem.
