Jane: We are using JD Edwards as an ERP; we are in the process to define which CMMS program we will implement, IT personnel wants JDE, but we in maintenance prefer a user friendly program…end of story: we are debating between Datastream 7i and JDE.
A visit made last week to a factory that has been using maintenance module from JDE since 1997 show us that the program can do any thing you want, but the problem is to operate the program, obtain reports and graphics, etc.
This company is looking for a way to continue using JDE but through a friendly user interface to avoid so much code typing, etc.

I understand your concerns. There are pros and cons to choosing either an integrated ERP system (JDE) or a "Best of Breed" CMMS system. (Datastream)integrated with an ERP. The downside to Best of Breed is that you have to integrate the two systems. This is not only an IT challenge but could also mean more labour for the maintenance department (possible double keying) or a lag in real-time data (while the two systems get synchronized). Maintenance also has to decide how much it wants to do in the Best of Breed vs JDE. For example in which system do you manage Maintenance Purchase Requisitions and MRO Inventory? How do you make sure the Maintenance WO costs of labour and materials get to the correct JDE General Ledger account so that Maintenance will get accurate costing information about their equipment? Sometimes there is double keying of PO's and Inventory transactions to keep the two systems in sync. The downside of an ERP system is that sometimes the maintenance department doesn't get all the features and ease of use it is looking for. I do know that JDE has made significant improvements in the later releases, specifically in the Plant Maintenance area, so it is important to know what release of JDE you were looking at and whether it is the most up to date version. If you are interested in more information about the functionality in the latest versions of JDE I would be more than happy to help.

You mean, almost never be in sync.
