work requests are made from all trades. it is done paper based and they make reference by just naming the equipment

Get a list of the common nick-names used on the floor. Aside the asset ID, there should be a descriptive field, maybe the nickname of the press is Grand PoBaa Big Grin

I am in favor of the alphanumeric code using P for pump, T for tank, GBX etc with some serial number.
Something like PR-101 (press on your PL-01) wil; have an electic motor EM-101 attached to it

Lucky you!!! starting from scratch Cool

Suppose you have an Production line PL-01 (asset)
with the childs
PR-101 and PUSH-102 on the second level. The Press and the Press Pusher are two distinct assets, with a reasonable value.
On the third level for the Press Pusher, PUSH-102 I would place EM-102 (motor) and GBX-102 (gearbox).
I wouldn't go any deeper. If there were two motors I would use EM-102A and EM-102B

In a later stadium when you are linking your spare parts, you could link a v-belt to PUSH-102, but bearings to EM-102 and/or GBX-102

In this module, the user doesn't have to enter the asset number. they can if they know it but its not essential as they use the asset register. it is set up in a heirarchy tree structure and they just follow the sequence till they get to the asset. so thats why the number isnt so important.

I understand your example and not a bad idea. very simple and basic. not long winded. thats why you have a very descriptive description so the trade personnel can make reference the piece of equipment easily.

thanks for your help. if theres any more suggestions i will still like to see. more the merrier.

Looked at the Grading Line Loader (don't know what that is) probably someting with a transport band, and some screws.

When I look at a maior asset, I try to break it up in functional blocks.
I look for brands, I look for interchangable blocks, I look for serial numbers

Electric/IC motors are strong candidates for becoming sub-assets (loss of power)
Other candidates are gearboxes (if they are build by another company) I love to put FALK gearboxes as subassets, if you go to the equipment builder (Grading Line Loader), for a bearing or seal, they will probably charge you 3 times the price Big Grin
Vertical screw drives Confused, only if it is a separate asset that can be bought/made by others.

Don't overdo it, things that you need to buy at the OEM, it does not make sense to make it a child asset. Probably you will have to supply the serial number of the main asset when ordering spares.

If you have too much child assets, the maintenance craft will start quarelling about who is the father (maintainer) and waste energy discussing if it is an electrical, hydraulical, mechanical or electronic problem, leaving the the owner Mad with his broken equipment.
